Audi A5 Design
The A5 broke Audi’s mould of inconspicuous conservative design within the mainstream range and delivered a car that is both muscular and elegant. The straight swooping lines and unequivocal masculine curves emphasise the overall presence of the car both on and off the road.
The front of the Audi A5 is designed to infatuate onlookers with piercingly bright LED lights that instantly identify the car as an Audi and further emphasise the shape of the bulky front bumper. As the car approaches the unmistakable shape of the Audi A5 becomes apparent.
The A5 Cabriolet encompasses a large degree of the external styling elements from the A5 coupe which should avert overzealous critics from classifying the car as an A4 Cabriolet with an A5 badge. The A5 Sportback again encompasses many design factors found in the A5 Coupe but with an air of maturation, perhaps a prerequisite of encompassing A4 Practicality with the A5 style.
Moving from exterior styling to the interior, this is where the A5 is less unique yet no less incredible, the A5 shares similar interior options to its siblings and this is no bad thing. Exceptional quality leathers, trims and multimedia options will leave you spoilt for choice, the A5 is a fantastic place to be and the interior layout brings everything within reach to the driver without compromising on comfort or safety.
Audi A5 Review
The Audi A5 Coupé was introduced to us in 2007 as a direct competitor to the then BMW 3 Series Coupé (now the BMW 4 Series) and the Mercedes C-Class Coupé, the Audi A5 was an instant success and a true credit to the Audi range of cars as Audi was missing out on this valuable premium touring Coupé market. The Audi A5 offered the masculinity and practicality that the iconic Audi TT lacked and a unique sense of excitement that the Audi A4 and A6 didn’t provide.
Instantly the Audi A5 was a success and Audi knew they had struck automotive gold, to tempt even more drivers from BMW and Mercedes Audi introduced the A5 Cabriolet in 2009, which effectively replaced the Audi A4 Cabriolet but with the muscular Coupé styling that made the Audi A5 Coupé such a big success.
In addition to the A5 Cabriolet, Audi grew the A5 range further in 2009 by introducing the distinctive Audi A5 Sportback, which is a peculiar yet wonderful amalgamation of saloon and Coupé that shouldn’t work together, but does, and wonderfully so. The Audi A5 Sportback is a fantastic choice for family-conscious drivers who appreciate stylish design but require saloon practicality.
Before the introduction of the Audi A5, the BMW 3 series always got the marks for the “best driver car” in the class, but Audi really does challenge this with the A5 as they have created a chassis that somehow harmoniously fuses the driver and the car together with the road. From the high-tech steering and suspension design to the unsurpassed interior quality, the Audi A5 is a true driver’s car and one that even the incredible BMW 4 Series can not contend with.
Audi A5 Performance
The performance of the Audi A5 is dependent on the engine that it is paired with, and Audi has plenty to choose from. The entry-level engine for the Audi A5 is the 1.8TFSI Petrol unit which provides 170PS of power and takes the Audi A5 coupe to 62MPH in 7.9 seconds. Other petrol engines within the Audi A5 range include a 2.0TFSI 4-cylinder engine (only available in Quattro models), Taking the car to 62MPH in 6.4 seconds whilst still returning a combined fuel economy of over 40MPG (That is Audi’s official figure, real road tests for this engine deliver a fuel economy of around 33MPG).
At the top end of the petrol range, Audi offers a 3.0TFSI Supercharged petrol engine in the Audi S5 and a huge 4.2 Litre V8 in the RS5 that will launch the car from 0 to 60 in the blink of an eye. Both are fantastically refined engines that perform tremendously well (especially when overtaking) and really benefit from the 7-speed S-Tronic transmissions they are perfectly matched with.
The diesel engines offered in the Audi A5 range from an entry-level 2.0TDI unit providing 150PS of power, and a 2.0TDI unit offering 177PS of power. Two 3.0TDI diesel engines are also offered providing 204Ps and 245PS of power.
